When Matthew first started camp, he was extremely hesitant and uncomfortable being in his assigned group. Due to impulse control and sensory processing challenges, Matthew needed a lot of extra structure, boundaries, and individualized attention in order to feel comfortable enough to participate in camp activities. Then…

Thoughtful, inclusive programming provided Matthew with what he needed to participate and CONNECT with his fellow campers.  In one week’s time, Matthew progressed from needing continual support and encouragement to independently initiating some conversations, advocating for himself, and eagerly staying and participating with his group.  

Inclusive programming also provided Matthew’s peers what they needed to engage more with him and with each other.  They better engaged in experiences TOGETHER.  Everyone learned new skills and forged new friendships.  Everyone grew socially and emotionally.

Inclusive programming helped camp staff be more intentional about fostering interactions, designing activities, and providing instruction in ways that helped Matthew and his peers thrive at camp.  Which resulted in more successful days and fewer trying ones.  Ultimately increasing feelings of self- efficacy, and enthusiasm; thereby, decreasing feelings of stress and burn-out.
