Understanding Disability Disclosure

Many applicants and employees are reluctant to disclose their disability because they fear that they will be discriminated against by selection officials, supervisors and co-workers. This is not a hypothetical fear; many individuals with disabilities regularly experience discrimination in their daily lives, such as microaggressions, physical barriers and – in the workplace – inability to be hired, constant focus on one’s disability rather than performance, or barriers to promotion and advancement. Research confirms that these experiences are widespread for individuals with disabilities.
In this training, research on reasons why individuals choose not to disclose will be reviewed along with strategies and best practices for your organization to create a culture that supports disclosure. Several organization’s self-identification campaigns will also be highlighted.
