Beyond Inclusion: Design for an Interdependent Future with Sara Hendren

November 16, 2021 @ 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM EST

$40.00
Headshot of Sara Hendren

Headshot of Sara HendrenMost of us think about “inclusive design” as a way to make sure the built world is accessible to people whose bodies fall outside the range of normal: prosthetics and assistive technologies for universal design, making sure no one is left behind. But what if there’s a deeper invitation hidden in the built environment, clues that lie in all its shapes and sizes?

In this webinar, Sara Hendren walks us through products, furniture, buildings, and city streets to locate the desirable forms of assistance that welcome all of us.

About the presenter: Sara Hendren is a humanist in tech—an artist, design researcher, writer, and professor at Olin College of Engineering. Her book What Can A Body Do? How We Meet the Built World explores the places where disability shows up in design. It was named one of the Best Books of 2020 by NPR and won a 2021 Science in Society Journalism award. Her work has been widely exhibited in museum exhibitions and is held in the permanent collections at MoMA and the Cooper Hewitt. In 2021-22, she is a fellow in Education Policy at the New America think tank, where she is researching the future of work for adults with cognitive and developmental disabilities.
